First4Adoption launches new elearning package, First Steps

18 June 2014

Today (Wednesday 18th June) sees the launch of First Steps, our elearning preparation package to help potential adopters in the early stages of the adoption process get a better understanding of what adoption entails and help them decide if it really is the right choice for them.

The Department for Education commissioned the elearning modules as part of the government’s drive to increase the number of much needed adopters for the 6000 children in care awaiting placement. First Steps fulfils the government’s aim to empower potential adopters to “self-select” in to the process while also freeing up adoption agencies resource by covering certain aspects of their preparation training sessions.

First Steps provides real insights in to life as an adopter through video and audio episodes and online lessons. It captures the stories and views of social workers and adopters, both with first-hand experience of what adoption is like. The lessons have been designed to help adopters understand the issues they need to be aware of and crucially, give them tips on how they can be overcome.

Gemma Gordon-Johnson, Head of Service at First4Adoption, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this new and innovative e-learning resource – First Steps has been created to assist those wishing to adopt to learn more about adoption and to complement the training they receive from their adoption agencies. I would like to thank all those who have helped us create First Steps.”

First Steps is the first of its kind in the field of adoption and will hopefully prove an invaluable tool in bringing more adopters to the children waiting in care.
